"My Dead Friend Zoe" presents a concept that might seem unlikely to succeed: a buddy comedy centered around PTSD. If it leans too much in one direction, the film risks feeling superficial and trivial; if it tilts the other way, it could become overly somber and heavy-handed.

However, director and co-writer Kyle Hausmann-Stokes, in his debut feature, has skillfully achieved a remarkable tonal equilibrium, blending humor with heartfelt moments seamlessly. His ambitious premise could have easily faltered, but by grounding "My Dead Friend Zoe" in real-life experiences, he creates a strong emotional core that resonates deeply with the audience.

He has also provided Sonequa Martin-Green with a chance to deliver a standout performance as an Army veteran grappling with the loss of her closest friend. Fans of “The Walking Dead” and “Star Trek: Discovery” will recognize Martin-Green, but this role is likely to introduce her to a whole new audience of moviegoers.

She commands the screen effortlessly, tackling a challenging role. Her character, Merit, remains emotionally guarded for much of the film, yet she allows moments of vulnerability to peek through until she ultimately breaks down in the film’s heart-wrenching conclusion. Martin-Green exudes confidence and skill, enhanced by her powerful voice and physicality.

The character who prevents her from engaging with both the outside world and her inner turmoil is Zoe, portrayed by the charming and witty Natalie Morales. As the title suggests, Zoe is deceased, which isn’t a spoiler. However, she continues to accompany Merit, lightening the mood with her sarcastic comments and observations. Only Merit can perceive her, as revealed in an early therapy scene. After eight years in Afghanistan, Merit is reluctant to be there and even less inclined to open up, despite the tough love from the group leader, played with his usual depth by Morgan Freeman. Zoe boldly expresses Merit’s growing frustration with all the emotional discussions. Yet, when the focus shifts back to Merit, the chair beside her in the circle remains empty. (Editor Ali Greer skillfully maintains clarity, especially amidst the film’s numerous flashbacks, while keeping the pacing brisk.) While this narrative device isn’t new—think of Tyler Durden in “Fight Club” or Sam Wheat in “Ghost”—the addition of war’s traumatic experiences adds a significant layer of depth.

The screenplay by Hausmann-Stokes, a seasoned veteran, and A.J. Bermudez effectively captures the essence of their friendship, characterized by witty exchanges, light-hearted teasing, and genuine laughter. Martin-Green and Morales portray this connection with depth and authenticity. Zoe humorously defends her jokes about old-fashioned names at the cemetery by stating, “I can joke about the dead, these are my people.” Their remarkable chemistry is essential in illustrating Zoe's reluctance to leave and Merit’s struggle to let her go.

However, Merit is pulled from her solitude when her mother (Gloria Reuben) asks her to check on her grandfather (Ed Harris), a distinguished Army veteran who is beginning to show signs of Alzheimer’s. Harris presents a formidable presence while also infusing the character with dignity. The bond between him and Martin-Green is genuinely touching, particularly in a scene where they share their war stories during a serene boat ride at his lakeside home. Utkarsh Ambudkar also helps draw Merit out as the owner of the local retirement community, engaging in a subtle yet sharp exchange of banter.

“My Dead Friend Zoe” cleverly uses humor to tackle a serious subject, making it accessible to a wide audience regarding veterans’ mental health—especially relevant as the current presidential administration is undermining the care our service members deserve. This film serves as a compelling piece of advocacy, cleverly wrapped in a playful and irreverent comedy about female friendship. Prepare to laugh and shed a few tears.
