Re:Zero Season 3 Episode 1 Review – It Feels Good to Be Back Crunchyroll

Re:Zero -Starting Life in Another World- Season 3 episode 1 released on crunchyroll, duration one-hour and 30-minute premiere that was packed with touching reunions, intense discussions, and stunning architecture inspired by real-world story. It wasn’t long before I found myself grinning and even laughing as I much enjoyed the comeback of one of the most iconic figures in anime.

It’s one thing to see our beloved characters come together for the sake of the story, but this episode practically shouted “We’re back!” at me the whole time I was watching. Honestly, that’s a great thing!

The length of the premiere, comparable to a theatrical release, was a great advantage for the entire season. We witnessed the challenges faced by the latest season of Reincarnated as a Slime due to its slow start in the initial weeks. In contrast, Re:Zero Season 3 took a proactive approach by addressing those slower moments right away, allowing it to delve into more serious themes for the remainder of the season. I truly believe this was the best decision they could have made. Even Priscilla would likely agree!

Re:Zero Season 3 Episode 1

The season premiere effectively laid the groundwork for all the sub-plots through engaging dialogue that flowed smoothly. I never found myself bored listening to the characters discuss various topics. From Garfield’s internal and external struggles to the Astrea family’s challenges, the introduction of Sirius Romanée-Conti, and Subaru’s sense of being out of place among the other knights, there was a rich tapestry of storylines to enjoy. Masahiro Yokotani crafted a script that was truly impressive for the premiere.

Will the premiere be remembered as one of the standout episodes of Season 3? Not exactly. However, it served as a solid episode to bring fans up to speed on the current happenings. It clearly laid out the timeline, what’s being developed, and what viewers can expect moving forward. That’s exactly what you hope for in a new season after a three-and-a-half-year hiatus. What truly surprised me in the best way was the impressive world-building and the introduction of lively new characters like Liliana.

The impact of Venice on this season of Re:Zero was hinted at earlier, but experiencing it in all its fantastical beauty was truly stunning. Art Director Ryouka Kinoshita excelled in creating an atmosphere that made me feel as if I were witnessing Re:Zero unfold right in Venice. The gondolas, the winding canals, and Subarau’s observation that Priestella resembles a maze because of its water-based construction all highlighted the significant Venetian influence in the season’s opening.

Episode direction by Masahiro Shinohara, Risa Suzuki, and Gouichi Iwahata, along with storyboarding by the first two and Hiroyuki Tsuchiya, truly brought the Venetian atmosphere to life in this episode. The stunning sunsets over the canal and the bridges, combined with camera angles from lower vantage points in the neighborhoods leading up to the main streets, added delightful details that helped me appreciate the charm of Priestella’s landscape. I felt just as thrilled to explore everything and everyone as Mimi was to reunite with Garfield.

Re:Zero Season 3 Episode 1

The best way to sum up the season premiere of Re:Zero Season 3 is with the Venetian saying “Magna e bevi che a vita xe un lampo,” which translates to enjoying the fleeting moments of life. This sentiment perfectly captures the essence of the first hour and 20 minutes, leading up to a thrilling final 10 minutes.

Episode 1 rating: 8/10
